FINAL REPORT The Effects of Behavioral Change in Response to Acoustic Disturbance on the Health of the Population of Blainville’s Beaked Whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) in the Tongue of the Ocean

چکیده
MFA sonar operations occur repeatedly on Navy ranges that are known to contain populations of Blainville’s (Mesoplodon densirostris, Md) and Cuvier’s (Ziphius cavirostris, Zc) beaked whales. Strandings of these species have been associated with the use of Navy sonar [1], [2]. A population of Md is known to use the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) range in the Tongue Of The Ocean (TOTO), Bahamas [3], and a population of Zc has been documented on the Southern California Offshore Range (SCORE) off San Clemente Island in California [4]. Developing a methodology for monitoring the long-term health of populations such as these, that are repeatedly exposed to sonar, is important for the continued operational integrity of these ranges.

The Effects of Behavioral Change in Response to Acoustic Disturbance on the Health of the Population of Blainville’s Beaked Whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) in the Tongue of the Ocean
The objective of this effort is to provide a model framework and initial estimate of the population level effect of sonar on Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) hereafter Md, in the Bahamas. It builds on the results from ongoing programs including the Marine Mammal Monitoring on Navy Ranges (M3R), the Behavioral Response Study (BRS), Density Estimation for Cetaceans (DECAF), Ba...
متن کاملCorrection: A Risk Function for Behavioral Disruption of Blainville’s Beaked Whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) from Mid-Frequency Active Sonar
There is increasing concern about the potential effects of noise pollution on marine life in the world's oceans. For marine mammals, anthropogenic sounds may cause behavioral disruption, and this can be quantified using a risk function that relates sound exposure to a measured behavioral response. Beaked whales are a taxon of deep diving whales that may be particularly susceptible to naval sona...
متن کاملSite Fidelity, Associations, and Movements of Cuvier’s (ziphius Cavirostris) and Blainville’s (mesoplodon Densirostris) Beaked Whales off the Island of Hawai‘i
Although the Ziphiidae are the second-most speciose family of cetaceans, information on beaked whale species and populations has been limited by the difficulties in finding and approaching free-ranging individuals. Site fidelity, patterns of association, and movements of two species, Cuvier’s (Ziphius cavirostris) and Blainville’s (Mesoplodon densirostris) beaked whales, were assessed using a 2...
متن کاملVessel Noise Affects Beaked Whale Behavior: Results of a Dedicated Acoustic Response Study
Some beaked whale species are susceptible to the detrimental effects of anthropogenic noise. Most studies have concentrated on the effects of military sonar, but other forms of acoustic disturbance (e.g. shipping noise) may disrupt behavior. An experiment involving the exposure of target whale groups to intense vessel-generated noise tested how these exposures influenced the foraging behavior o...
متن کاملFINAL REPORT LATTE – Linking Acoustic Tests and Tagging using statistical Estimation
The aim of this project was to construct and fit mathematical models of beaked whales diving behavior, and their response to MFA sonar. These models would be parameterized by fitting them simultaneously to three sources of data: (1) short-term, high fidelity tagging studies on individual whales (some from animals exposed to acoustic stimuli); (2) medium-term satellite tagging studies of individ...
